Osteopathy in Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes rapid biomechanical and physiological change. As a result, increased strain on muscles, joints, and connective tissues may lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Osteopathy can help support the body through these changes.

For many women, pregnancy brings discomfort, particularly in the lower back and pelvis. At the same time, pregnancy limits the safe use of many pain-relieving medications. In this context, osteopathy provides a safe and effective hands-on approach when delivered by an experienced practitioner. Dr Kingston has treated pregnant people and babies for over 30 years and, as a parent of three, understands the physical demands pregnancy places on those expecting.

Throughout pregnancy, ongoing physical and hormonal changes can place additional stress on the body. In particular, the release of the hormone relaxin increases pelvic mobility to prepare for birth. While this process is essential, it can also increase strain on the spine, pelvis, and surrounding tissues. Consequently, existing injuries may worsen, or new symptoms may develop. Although some women experience few difficulties, many benefit from additional support.

All osteopathic treatment provided by Dr Kingston is gentle and carefully adapted to pregnancy. He will not use any technique that may place you or your baby at risk.

Where there is a history of traumatic birth or caesarean section, an osteopathic assessment may help restore spinal and pelvic function before a future pregnancy. After birth, we also recommend an assessment for both mother and baby to ensure there has been no undue strain and to support a smooth return to normal function.
