Osteopathy for Sports Injuries

Osteopathy for Sports Injuries
Sport has played a central role in my life, both competitively and recreationally, and it continues to shape my approach to osteopathy. Over the years, I have participated in rugby Yorkshire Dales, windsurfing, kayaking, surf lifesaving, and more recently, aikido. As a result, I have experienced my fair share of injuries and understand first-hand the physical demands sport places on the body.
Following a concussion sustained while playing rugby, I sought treatment from an osteopath. That treatment not only supported my recovery but also addressed several unresolved injuries, which significantly improved my performance. This experience strongly influenced my decision to pursue osteopathy. Since then, I have worked with high-level and international rugby players, professional dancers, joggers, Olympic gold medallists, and dedicated recreational athletes.
Osteopathy often plays an important role in the treatment of sports injuries and in supporting a safe and timely return to activity. Where tissue damage or surgery has occurred, rehabilitation also falls well within the scope of osteopathic care. By combining hands-on treatment with a Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation (DNS) approach, recovery can often progress more efficiently.
In cases of acute sports injuries where no tissue has torn or broken, patients frequently respond quickly to osteopathic treatment. In my practice, I may use RockTape strapping, instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques, traditional osteopathic methods, and tailored DNS rehabilitation as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
DNS, or Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation, is a highly effective approach that helps restore control, coordination, and strength in injured areas. It also plays an important role in injury prevention. Many people seek treatment not because they are in pain, but because they want to improve performance and reduce the risk of future injury.
While elite athletes often receive ongoing support to maintain peak performance, young athletes are frequently overlooked. Children involved in competitive sport, dance, or martial arts place significant physical demands on their developing bodies. Unresolved birth strains, missed developmental stages, and previous injuries can all affect performance and increase injury risk. For this reason, a simple osteopathic screening can be valuable in identifying and addressing issues early.
